Numbers 9:15-23 / Step by Step
📖 Scripture
15 On the day the tabernacle, the tent of the covenant law, was set up, the cloud covered it. From evening till morning the cloud above the tabernacle looked like fire.
16 That is how it continued to be; the cloud covered it, and at night it looked like fire.
17 Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tent, the Israelites set out; wherever the cloud settled, the Israelites encamped.
18 At the Lord’s command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they remained in camp.
19 When the cloud remained over the tabernacle a long time, the Israelites obeyed the Lord’s order and did not set out.
20 Sometimes the cloud was over the tabernacle only a few days; at the Lord’s command they would encamp, and then at his command they would set out.
21 Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening till morning, and when it lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud lifted, they set out.
22 Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for two days or a month or a year, the Israelites would remain in camp and not set out; but when it lifted, they would set out.
23 At the Lord’s command they encamped, and at the Lord’s command they set out. They obeyed the Lord’s order, in accordance with his command through Moses.

✅ Reflection
God’s Very Presence (9:15–18)
God provides the Israelites with a simple yet powerful sign. Not only do the cloud and the fire guide Israel to its next destination, but they visibly represent God’s presence with His people. Though the Israelites may not know exactly where they are at any given moment, they know they are exactly where their Lord wants them to be. We have the same assurance to ground us and help us resist anxieties that arise from uncertainties. The saints today have something better than cloud and fire; we have God’s very presence dwelling inside us. And though we do not see Him physically, He speaks to us through His Word and guides us through His Spirit. And when we err, He promises to discipline those He loves and bring us back on track.
What uncertainties about your future cause you to become anxious? Meditate on the truth that God has led you this far and His presence remains with you in your uncertainty.
Learning Dependency (9:19–23)
We see that the Israelites faithfully obeyed God’s commands to stay or to set out. Whether they had to stop for a day or for a month, they learned to be wholly dependent on the Lord for every step. They were a nation recently freed from the oppression of Egypt, but what God teaches them is not how to be autonomous. Instead, He teaches them to depend on Him. Modern culture idolizes the notion of freedom. Freedom is painted as the means to do anything an individual pleases whenever the desire arises. In contrast, biblical freedom—true freedom—is always defined as the means to obey God and depend on Him in whatever He calls us to do.
How hard is it for you to depend on God? Take the time to reflect on the ways God is teaching you to depend on Him.
“Your growth in Christ will go no further than your settledness, way down deep in your heart, that God loves you.”

✅ Prayer
Father, help me measure Your love not by the progress that I see in me, but by the sacrifice of Your Son, whom You gave for me on the cross. May this knowledge spur me on to surrender all to You, knowing that Your love is real and true. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Sections of the Journey
I still remember what would go through my mind whenever I received new sheet music from our conductor. I would look at pages full of unfamiliar notes and think to myself, How are we going to learn all of this? There is something formidably daunting about seeing the sum of all that needs to be done. It tends to detract one from even wanting to get started. Enter the wisdom of the conductor. He tells us to put away all the pages except for the first, and even then, he sections off that one page into several sections. During the ensuing weeks, we focus on one section at a time, going ahead only when the previous sections have been mastered. Many times, we think we would greatly benefit if God just told us everything He had planned for our lives from the start. But would Israel have set out if they had known the wilderness that stretched between them and the promised land? Would David have accepted his anointing had he known that suffering was the road to his kingship? Would the many saints throughout history have stepped forward if they had known all the hardships God would use for their sanctification? Enter the wisdom of God. He who is the author and perfector of our faith has sectioned our lives and calls us to look only at the parts that are necessary at the moment. He will lead us to the next section when we are ready. And one day, sooner than we know it, we will see how all those sections come together to create a glorious symphony.
