💬 Reflection
Yearning for God (84:1–7)
Humans are the most restless creatures on earth. We constantly search for purpose and fulfillment, yet we are never fully satisfied. When watching a bird rest peacefully in its nest, it is hard not to wonder what it would be like to live with such simplicity and contentment. The truth is that we are restless because we were created to enjoy perfect communion with God and nothing less will satisfy the longing we constantly feel. For those who are in Christ, we have begun to taste the fulfillment of this deep desire as we find rest in God’s presence. And when we are finally home with Christ, our satisfaction will be complete in eternal worship and unending joy.
Reflection question: When do you find yourself yearning for God’s presence? Bring your restlessness before Him and ask Him to refresh your soul.
Our Greatest Treasure (84:8–12)
The Christian walk is a daily invitation to trust that God has greater things prepared for us, even when the comforts of this world seem so tempting. Though God watches over us and protects us from evil, we need constant reminders to walk faithfully. As we mature in faith, we come to realize that the pleasures of sin are fleeting, but God’s blessings are eternal. Through prayer, we remember the joy of being in God’s presence while also confessing our struggles with sin and recommitting to strive for holiness. Until we fully experience God’s eternal glory, we will face worldly temptations. But God’s presence is both our refuge and joy in this fight, and He promises not to withhold any good thing that we need.
Reflection question: What temptations tend to distract you from God? Take a moment to reflect on the joy of being in His presence.
🙏 Prayer
Heavenly Father, being in Your presence is a pleasure far greater than anything this world can offer. Guard my heart from seeking fulfillment in worldly temptations, and remind me again of the joy found in worshiping You and walking with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
✍ Essay
A Place to Belong
We live in a restless era where we are more connected than ever yet feel more isolated than ever before. With the Internet at our fingertips, we can find communities tailored to every interest and hobby imaginable. Yet, despite this connectivity, people feel lonelier, dating is more complicated, and local communities are slowly fading away.
I have seen this firsthand among young adults at my church who deeply yearn for community. They are talented, funny, and well-informed but struggle to build lasting connections, even with each other. Recently, however, things began to change when my wife started a weekly prayer group with them. Through prayer and worship, these young adults found a reason to gather, which fostered genuine fellowship. The irony is that everything they were longing for had always been there: the people, the opportunities, and the community itself. We were just so focused on our own needs that we failed to see the answers right in front of us.
This experience taught me that community should never be the ultimate goal. It is a secondary outcome of something greater. No matter how many resources or opportunities we have, our eternal longings cannot be satisfied by earthly desires. It is only when we seek God first that we realize He has already blessed us with everything we truly need.
