Psalm 78:1-8 / Lessons from History

📖 Scripture

1 My people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
3 things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us.
4 We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done.
5 He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors to teach their children,
6 so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.
7 Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.
8 They would not be like their ancestors— a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him.

✅ Scripture Summary

The psalmist calls the people to listen to his teaching. He enjoins them to share God’s wonders with future generations so they will trust Him and not forget His deeds. He wants to ensure new generations will not repeat the mistakes of their ancestors, who were stubborn and unfaithful.

✅ Memory verse

But God is my King from long ago; he brings salvation on the earth.
– Psalm 74:12

✅ Reflection

Pass It On (78:1–4)
Faith is kept alive as each succeeding generation testifies about God’s deeds to the next. The psalmist speaks of “hidden things, things from of old”
(v. 2) that have been made known to his generation by their ancestors. He then emphasizes the need to make these things known to the generation that follows. A living faith is one that actively seeks to bear witness to God’s Word, which reveals His goodness, grace, and power. Of course, for those of us living on this side of the death and resurrection of Jesus, God’s Word is revealed to us most clearly in the person of Jesus. As we testify to what He has done and is doing through God’s people, we help keep our fellow believers’ faith burning.

Consider the ways your faith has benefited from the testimony of other followers of Jesus. Ask God to make your faith an encouragement to many who will come after you.

When the Chain Is Broken (78:5–8)
God clearly commands His people to keep the community’s faith alive by teaching their children. Like an unbroken chain, each generation is instructed in the ways of the Lord, and the faith of the community is made stronger as the living and personal faith of parents becomes a living and personal faith in the lives of children. When God’s people neglect to talk about God’s works with younger believers, this chain of faith is broken, and the consequences are disastrous. It may even lead to rebellion and God’s painful discipline, as eventually happened in Israel’s history. While none of us has any control over whether the next generation will accept our testimony of faith, God has given us the responsibility of making His gospel known across nations and across generations.

What does this passage tell you about the importance of remembering what God has done for your community? Ask God to build up your family’s or community’s faith through His work in your individual lives.

✅ Prayer

Lord Jesus, the faith You gave me is not something to be kept to myself. Open doors for me to tell others about what You have done in my life in the hope that they, too, will come to believe in You. In Your name, amen.

Everyday Miracles

The Great Commission includes the instructions to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28:19). One of the most effective ways we can do this is by sharing with others our personal accounts of God’s goodness and faithfulness in our lives. Psalm 78:4 reminds us of the importance of this very thing: “We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done.”

When we share with others the many ways God has provided for us throughout our lives, those around us will be encouraged and inspired. Our stories will point them toward the Lord. And the wonderful part is that it’s not only the “big” miracles that will speak to others of God’s goodness; it’s the “small” ones, too. God’s power was displayed both when He triumphantly parted the Red Sea for the Israelites and when He gently said to the centurion, “Let it be done just as you believed it would,” and healed his servant with only His words (Matt. 8:13).

We don’t need to wait for extraordinary signs and wonders for us to share about God’s goodness in our lives. The seemingly small ways that God shows up for us matter just as much: His comfort, His presence, His mercy, His forgiveness, His grace, His love. These everyday miracles will be a powerful witness to others in our lives. “Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands” (Ps. 78:7).
