Numbers 22:15-30 / God or Selfish Gain?

📖 Scripture

15 Then Balak sent other officials, more numerous and more distinguished than the first.
16 They came to Balaam and said: “This is what Balak son of Zippor says: Do not let anything keep you from coming to me,
17 because I will reward you handsomely and do whatever you say. Come and put a curse on these people for me.”
18 But Balaam answered them, “Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything great or small to go beyond the command of the Lord my God.
19 Now spend the night here so that I can find out what else the Lord will tell me.”
20 That night God came to Balaam and said, “Since these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you.”
21 Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the Moabite officials.
22 But God was very angry when he went, and the angel of the Lord stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.
23 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, it turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat it to get it back on the road.
24 Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path through the vineyards, with walls on both sides.
25 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat the donkey again.
26 Then the angel of the Lord moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left.
27 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam, and he was angry and beat it with his staff.
28 Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth, and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?”
29 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.”
30 The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?” “No,” he said.

✅ Scripture Summary

Balak again sends messengers with greater rewards, urging Balaam to come and curse Israel. God permits Balaam to go but commands him to speak only what He directs. On the way, Balaam’s donkey sees the angel of the Lord blocking the path and refuses to move. After Balaam strikes the donkey, God opens its mouth, and it speaks.

The Lord said to Moses, “Do not be afraid of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land.” – Numbers 21:34a

✅ Reflection

A Heart to Obey (22:15–20)
Balak’s persistence in securing Balaam’s help reveals his determination to manipulate spiritual forces for personal gain. Balaam, though aware of God’s command, entertains the offer once again—perhaps hoping for a different answer or a greater reward. His hesitation exposes a divided heart, one that hears God’s will yet remains enticed by worldly gain. Like Balaam, we sometimes seek to negotiate with God, hoping for His approval while still pursuing our own desires. But God calls us to wholehearted obedience. When we allow personal ambitions to influence our decisions, we risk aligning ourselves with the wrong side. The enemy often presents us with tempting opportunities, but they come at the cost of our faithfulness to God.

How did you respond the last time you faced a choice between obeying God and pursuing a personal desire? Ask God to align your heart with His will.

Eyes that See (22:21–30)
Balaam’s journey to Balak is marked by a striking irony: his donkey sees what he cannot. The angel of the Lord stands in his path, yet he remains blind and persistently beats the animal that tries to save his life. Only when God opens Balaam’s eyes does he recognize his peril. This account illustrates how sin blinds us to God’s warnings. Balaam was so set on pursuing his own way that he failed to see the obvious signs. Likewise, when we insist on our plans rather than seeking God’s will, we risk becoming spiritually blind and insensitive to His leading. His mercy sometimes places obstacles in our way to redirect us. When you realize He is leading you to change course, do not resist Him.

Take a moment to reflect on whether there are warning signs God has placed in your path. Ask Him for clarity where you need it.

“When we are born again, the eyes of our hearts are enlightened and, through faith, we begin to see the Treasure: God himself in Christ.”

– Jon Bloom

✅ Prayer

Lord, help me recognize when my heart is divided between Your will and my own desires. Give me the courage to choose obedience over compromise. May I seek Your approval above all else, trusting that Your plans for me are far better than anything the world can offer. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Heaven-Sent Roadblocks

Balaam became angry with his donkey’s strange behavior. Unknown to him was the reality of God’s hand in the donkey’s actions. Later, God reveals to Balaam that it was He who made the donkey act in such a way, and with that revelation, it becomes clear to Balaam that he would not be able to do or say anything beyond what God allows him to. This is why he later says to Balak, “I can’t say whatever I please. I must speak only what God puts in my mouth” (Num. 22:38). Whether it suits him or not, Balaam cannot act beyond the bounds of God’s sovereignty.

God did not make it immediately clear to Balaam that He was the one causing the donkey to act at odds with Balaam’s wishes. And as long as Balaam was ignorant of God’s hand in the situation, he unknowingly pushed forward against the Lord. When we insist on our own way, we sometimes oppose God unknowingly, unaware that He has placed obstacles in our path to check our rebellion. This is why, when things do not happen as we would expect or want them to, our hearts need to be humble enough to know that what we see as unexpected or less than ideal could very well be God’s hand in our life, protecting and redirecting us as necessary for our good and for His glory.
