Mark 14:32-42 / Jesus Prays and Obeys
📖 Scripture
32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
33 He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.
34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”
35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him.
36 “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?
38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing.
40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners.
42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Christ’s Unshakable Resolve (14:32–36)
As Jesus prays in Gethsemane, He confronts the weight of the sacrifice He is called to make, and He is overwhelmed with sorrow. He knows that He will bear the burden of the sins of the world upon Himself, suffer on the cross, and experience the pain of His impending separation from the Father. Yet, Jesus’ prayer shows us the extent of His love. He willingly submits to the will of the Father despite the immense difficulties of the task ahead. We see the level of Jesus’ dedication to the Father and His commitment to us. Though He is deeply troubled about what will happen in the next few hours, Jesus is ready to lay down His life.
Reflect on Jesus’ willingness to suffer for you despite what lies ahead. Read His prayer again and note the ways in which He humbly submitted Himself to the will of the Father.
Staying Spiritual Alert (14:37–42)
While Jesus is praying fervently through sweat and tears, the disciples sleep. While the weight of the world is being placed upon Jesus’ shoulders, Peter, James, and John succumb to the weight of their heavy eyelids. Jesus warns the disciples not to fall into temptation. This is a time to be spiritually alert, not physically inert. Sometimes our drive to satisfy our physical desires distracts us from recognizing the spiritual needs inside and around us. The spirit may be willing but good intentions are of little use without physical discipline. May we heed Jesus’ words in our own lives to “stay alert” and be ready for action when He calls.
How would you evaluate your spiritual alertness? Confess to God anything that is distracting you or weighing you down.
“The next time you begin to think how unworthy and wormy and inferior you feel, remember that to God you are the object of His attention and His affection.”
