Step by Step Victory

Joshua 8:10-23

📖 Scripture

10 Early the next morning Joshua mustered his army, and he and the leaders of Israel marched before them to Ai.

11 The entire force that was with him marched up and approached the city and arrived in front of it. They set up camp north of Ai, with the valley between them and the city.

12 Joshua had taken about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, to the west of the city.

13 So the soldiers took up their positions—with the main camp to the north of the city and the ambush to the west of it. That night Joshua went into the valley.

14 When the king of Ai saw this, he and all the men of the city hurried out early in the morning to meet Israel in battle at a certain place overlooking the Arabah. But he did not know that an ambush had been set against him behind the city.

15 Joshua and all Israel let themselves be driven back before them, and they fled toward the wilderness.

16 All the men of Ai were called to pursue them, and they pursued Joshua and were lured away from the city.

17 Not a man remained in Ai or Bethel who did not go after Israel. They left the city open and went in pursuit of Israel.

18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Hold out toward Ai the javelin that is in your hand, for into your hand I will deliver the city.” So Joshua held out toward the city the javelin that was in his hand.

19 As soon as he did this, the men in the ambush rose quickly from their position and rushed forward. They entered the city and captured it and quickly set it on fire.

20 The men of Ai looked back and saw the smoke of the city rising up into the sky, but they had no chance to escape in any direction; the Israelites who had been fleeing toward the wilderness had turned back against their pursuers.

21 For when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that smoke was going up from it, they turned around and attacked the men of Ai.

22 Those in the ambush also came out of the city against them, so that they were caught in the middle, with Israelites on both sides. Israel cut them down, leaving them neither survivors nor fugitives.

23 But they took the king of Ai alive and brought him to Joshua.

📘 Scripture Summary

Joshua rises early, gathers the Israelite army, and approaches Ai. He and his men pretend to retreat, drawing Ai’s forces out. The Israelites then ambush the city, set it on fire, and Ai’s army is trapped between Israel’s troops. Joshua holds out his javelin until the city is destroyed. Israel strikes down Ai’s army, leaving none alive except the captured king.

📖 Memory Verse

“Afterward, Joshua read all the words of the law—the blessings and the curses—just as it is written in the Book of the Law.”
– Joshua 8:34

🔎 Reflection

A Fatal Overconfidence (8:10–17)

How easy it is to be blinded by past success! Because the army of Ai has defeated Israel before, they are overconfident and easily fall for Israel’s strategic trap. This can serve as a warning to those of us who tend to rely on our own strengths and abilities. We cannot assume that we will have success every time simply because we have had success in the past. In the second battle, Joshua and the people of Israel seek, follow, and trust in God’s leadership, and they lure the men of Ai away from the city, leaving it vulnerable to attack. What a contrast we see here between those who place their faith in themselves and those who trust in the Lord!

Reflect on the contrast between Israel’s first and second battles at Ai. What personal lessons can you gain from these battles?

Victory over Idolatry (8:18–23)

God tells Joshua to point his javelin at Ai, the weapon symbolizing that He is delivering the city into Joshua’s hand. Immediately, the men of Israel rush forward and capture the city, setting it ablaze. God is fulfilling His promise that He would bring His people to the promised land. However, Israel has to achieve several victories in battle in order to acquire the land. Those who are already in Canaan are not without sin: They worship idols and would later encourage the Israelites to also engage in idolatry. God is uprooting idolatry and wickedness through these battles. In our own lives, let us not tolerate any idolatry, but resist anything and anyone that might drive us away from God.

What idolatry do you tolerate in your life? How can you actively fight against them?

🙏 Prayer

Lord Jesus, the world is full of idols, and many deny Your truth and mock Your ways. Help me to fight against idolatry and keep my focus on You in seasons of turmoil and testing. In Your name I pray, amen.

🖋 Essay

Aware of the Lord

Although we cannot physically see God, we can see His handiwork. From the beauty and artistry present in the plants and animals that inhabit the sky, earth, and sea to the wondrous intricacies of the physical structure of the human body, we can see God’s amazing creativity. We can detect a sense of God’s presence on earth because we have signs of His existence all around us. This includes the evidence of His work in our lives. Only God can do something as astounding as granting the gift of salvation and changing a person’s heart from not believing in any deity to having a heart that loves Him, especially in a time when so many question the existence of God.

In today’s passage, we see that God makes Himself known. The Lord did not have to speak to Joshua during the battle by directing him to hold out his javelin toward Ai. God could have let the battle continue without any acknowledgment of His involvement. However, His command to Joshua reminds him and all who hear his story that God is present alongside His people in battle. Generations later, it continues to be important for us to acknowledge and be aware of God’s presence and providence so that He may be glorified. When we see that the events in our lives are His doing, He receives the praise and honor for the work He has done. May we be increasingly aware of God and His work within our lives.
