A Promise of Salvation

Joshua 2:15–24

📖 Scripture

15 So she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall.

16 She said to them, “Go to the hills so the pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there three days until they return, and then go on your way.”

17 Now the men had said to her, “This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us

18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house.

19 If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them.

20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.”

21 “Agreed,” she replied. “Let it be as you say.” So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

22 When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned without finding them.

23 Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them.

24 They said to Joshua, “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.”

📘 Scripture Summary

– Joshua 1:9

🔎 Reflection

Faith Marked by Obedience (2:15–21)

After Rahab helps them escape, the spies reiterate the oath they made to protect her and her household during the coming attack on Jericho. However, this promise is conditional: she must tie a scarlet cord in the window and ensure that her family stays inside her house. The scarlet cord becomes a symbol of Rahab’s faith and obedience. In many ways, it prefigures the blood of Christ that marks and saves believers today. God’s promises are sure, but they require a response of faithfulness and obedience. Rahab’s act of trust secured her deliverance. In the same way, our salvation through Christ calls us to remain steadfast in our faith, live by His Word, and point others to His saving grace.

What visible signs of your faith in Christ does your life show? Like Rahab, let your life be marked by trust and obedience.

Faith Strengthened by Evidence (2:22–24)

Following Rahab’s instructions, the two spies hide for three days in the mountains before returning to Joshua. Upon their return, they share an encouraging report—that God has already given Jericho into Israel’s hands. Their confidence stems not from Israel’s military strength, but from what they witnessed: Jericho’s people are in dread of God’s power. Their fear is evidence that God is at work. The spies’ report is brimming with assurance and their faith is strengthened through experience and signs of God’s providence. In our walk with God, we too can look for indicators of His faithfulness. Whether through His Word, answered prayers, or the testimony of others, God continually reassures us that He is going ahead of us.

What glimpses of God’s faithfulness have you witnessed recently? Reflect on how His promises are already unfolding in your life.

🙏 Prayer

Lord, thank you for Your promise of salvation. Help me to live in obedience, trusting You even when the future seems uncertain. May my life be marked by faith, and may I lead others to the hope found in Jesus Christ alone. In His name I pray, amen.

🖋 Essay

God Uses the Weak

There have been many times throughout my life when I have felt like God couldn’t possibly use somebody like me. I have felt too young, too old, too ordinary, too inexperienced, sometimes “too much,” and other times “not enough.” I have convinced myself that I was unqualified, unhelpful, and inept and that I would be of no use to God given my long list of flaws and failures. But none of this surprises the Lord. He knows me inside and out, including all of the weaknesses and insecurities within me.

One of the most amazing things about God is that He does not only choose us despite our flaws; He often chooses us because of them. You have probably heard it said before that God turns our mess into our message and our trials into our testimony. Paul records Jesus’ words to him in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” In other words, God uses our shortcomings to reveal His strength and accomplish what we could never have managed on our own.

Rahab is a beautiful example of this truth. Though society rejected and dismissed her, God chose her to play a significant role in His redemptive story, even placing her in the very genealogy of Jesus. So, the next time you doubt yourself and think that your past mistakes are preventing you from being useful for the Lord’s kingdom, think again. God uses those we least expect in order to show Himself mighty and accomplish His perfect will here on earth.
