Righteous Before God

Romans 2:1-16

📖 Scripture

1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.

2 Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.

3 So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?

4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.

6 God “will repay each person according to what they have done.”

7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.

8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.

9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;

10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

11 For God does not show favoritism.

12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.

13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.

14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law.

15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.)

16 This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

📝 Scripture Summary

Paul says that anyone who passes judgment is without excuse because they do the same things. God’s judgment is based on truth and His kindness is meant to lead people to repentance. God will repay everyone according to what they have done; both Jews and Gentiles will be held accountable when He judges people’s secret thoughts.

💡 Memory Verse

For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”
– Romans 1:17

🔎 Reflection

No Favoritism (2:1–11)

God does not show favoritism in His righteous judgment. His people should not assume that they are superior and condemn others for their sins. These verses remind us of the hypocrisy of passing judgment on other people while committing sins ourselves. The truth is that no one is able to escape God’s judgment. Sometimes we are quick to take advantage of God’s love and patience toward us, but we should actually respond with repentance when we experience His kindness. Instead of being stubborn and unrepentant, we should recognize the grace we have received and persist in doing good for His glory and honor. We should remember that, despite our rebellion and sinfulness, God made a way for us to receive His forgiveness because of His righteousness.

When do you feel superior to other people? Meditate on God’s kindness and grace toward you, and consider how you may extend His love and grace to others.

Knowing God’s Law (2:12–16)

The Jews are familiar with God’s Law, but simply knowing His Law does not lead to being declared righteous in His sight and being exempt from judgment. Those who know God’s Law are also judged by that Law, and they are declared righteous when they obey the Law. Those who do not know God’s Law are still accountable for their actions. They cannot claim ignorance or innocence because everyone has a conscience that guides their morality. Their conscience acts as a divine law written on their hearts, helping them know what is right and wrong. Therefore, everyone can understand the gospel; we all know that we need the saving work of Jesus to cleanse us from our sin.

What sins do you no longer struggle with today? Pause and reflect on Christ’s sacrifice that has cleansed you from sin and granted you eternal life with Him.

✍️ Essay

Recognizing Our Sins

If you talk to people about Jesus today, you may hear, “But I’m a good person,” or “I already believe in God.” With these responses, they seem to suggest, “I don’t really need Jesus.”

These responses are not very different from the roadblocks to faith that Paul addresses in Romans 2. Paul recognizes that some people have developed an inflated sense of self because of their knowledge of God’s Law. On the surface, confidence in one’s Scriptural knowledge may not seem like a roadblock to faith. After all, knowing God’s Law is clearly a good thing! However, there can be a danger in defining spirituality or goodness based on religious knowledge since it can blind us from seeing our own sinfulness and need for forgiveness. If we fail to recognize our sins, we cannot fully understand the grace of the gospel.

As Paul lays the foundation for the gospel in the early chapters of Romans, he makes one thing very clear: We must understand the bad news to fully appreciate the good news. More specifically, we need to understand the depths of our sinful condition and the hopelessness of overcoming it on our own to fully recognize why Jesus’ sacrificial death for us is so significant and eternally salvific. No matter how much we know or how good we think we can be, we cannot be declared holy or righteous by our own efforts. However, when we recognize our sinfulness, we have even greater appreciation for the holiness and righteousness of Christ.
