Perseverance and Training
2 Timothy 3:10–17
📖 Scripture
10 You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance,
11 persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.
12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
13 while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,
15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

🔎 Reflection
Through Persecution and Suffering (3:10–13)
Paul has faced persecution and suffering in multiple cities, but he conveys to Timothy that the pain is worth it for the sake of the gospel because the troubles are temporary. Paul has been able to continue his journey because God has rescued him every time. Life for the early Christians was especially difficult because many faced persecution and even death for their faith in Jesus. Many Christians around the world continue to face similar situations today. Whatever form of persecution or suffering we may experience for the gospel, let us support one another in multiple ways, including prayer and finances, and let us keep our eyes on Jesus, who understands our suffering and is the reason why we persevere through it.
Consider the kinds of persecution that the Christians in your community face. What can you do to offer relief and support?
Continue to Learn (3:14–17)
A good worker requires training and equipping, so Paul reminds Timothy to continue reading and learning from Scripture. Even though Timothy has known the Scriptures from infancy, he can grow in wisdom as he continues to immerse himself in the God-breathed words. By doing so, he will improve in his work of serving the Lord and become more effective in teaching, correcting, and training others in righteousness. Even if we have read the Bible since we were very young, there is always more to learn. We will grow in wisdom as we read it, not only for our personal growth, but also for the benefit of others around us.
How have you benefited from a fellow believer’s knowledge of the Scriptures? What books of the Bible would you like to immerse yourself in this season?
🙏 Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of Your Word that helps me know Your character and Your works. As I read more from Scripture, may I be inspired by the words You breathed and grow in wisdom and in my ability to encourage and teach those around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
🖋 Essay
When Reading Unfamiliar Texts
Some Old Testament books of the Bible are not as familiar to me as others. If you asked me to summarize Habakkuk or Nahum, I would struggle to do so. Reading the prophets can be challenging because they are often filled with severe judgments from God: God’s people are unfaithful and prophets are sent to proclaim the consequences for their sins.
While the prophetic books are not always the most encouraging or inspiring texts to read, there is a reason why they have been carefully preserved across thousands of years and why Christians today continue to gain profound lessons from them. We see in them the gracious character of God. He extends so much mercy, delaying judgment and continually providing and caring for His people. We also see the diligence and faithfulness of the prophets themselves, who have the daunting task of facing those who do not want to hear their message. The prophets have the privilege of being God’s mouthpiece, but the role often comes with challenging assignments and even suffering.
No matter what season we are going through, we can read different texts from Scripture, including unfamiliar ones, and be inspired and encouraged as we see God’s good character and works. Even in passages about judgment, we see God’s history of graciousness to His people. With God’s proven record of faithfulness, we are assured that we can persevere through any situation because we serve a God who cares about His people and is faithful to keep His promises.
