Partners in Kingdom Work

Romans 15:22–33

📖 Scripture

22 This is why I have often been hindered from coming to you.

23 But now that there is no more place for me to work in these regions, and since I have been longing for many years to visit you,

24 I plan to do so when I go to Spain. I hope to see you while passing through and to have you assist me on my journey there, after I have enjoyed your company for a while.

25 Now, however, I am on my way to Jerusalem in the service of the Lord’s people there.

26 For Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the Lord’s people in Jerusalem.

27 They were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in the Jews’ spiritual blessings, they owe it to the Jews to share with them their material blessings.

28 So after I have completed this task and have made sure that they have received this contribution, I will go to Spain and visit you on the way.

29 I know that when I come to you, I will come in the full measure of the blessing of Christ.

30 I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me.

31 Pray that I may be kept safe from the unbelievers in Judea and that the contribution I take to Jerusalem may be favorably received by the Lord’s people there,

32 so that I may come to you with joy, by God’s will, and in your company be refreshed.

33 The God of peace be with you all. Amen.

💡 Scripture Summary

Paul explains that he has been delayed in visiting Rome because his work in the eastern regions was not yet complete. He plans to go to Spain and visit the believers in Rome on the way. But first, he will deliver a contribution to the poor in Jerusalem. He asks the believers to pray for safety and acceptance of his service.

🔎 Reflection

A Shared Mission (15:22–24)

Paul expresses his desire to visit the believers in Rome as part of his larger missionary journey on his way to Spain. Although he did not plant the Roman church, Paul recognizes and values the partnership of the Christians there. His request for support—both spiritual and practical—underscores the importance of collaboration and challenges individualistic approaches to ministry, reminding us that gospel work is never meant to be done in isolation. Paul’s vision is shaped by a deep understanding of the global nature of the church and of God’s mission, and, today, we are to continue supporting, encouraging, and providing resources for one another in fulfilling the Great Commission because we are all fellow workers in God’s mission.

Reflect on how you can actively support gospel work around the world with prayer, encouragement, or practical resources. Ask God to enlarge your heart for His global mission and use you as a faithful partner in His work.

Love in Action (15:25–33)

In a gesture of love and unity, the Gentile churches are sending Paul with contributions for the struggling believers in Jerusalem. Paul frames the support not merely as generosity but as moral and spiritual obligation. The Gentiles have shared in Israel’s spiritual blessings and now respond with material gifts. Their actions embody the gospel: grace received, grace shared. Yet, Paul’s heart remains heavy for the Jews. He longs for their salvation and hopes that his relief mission might open gospel doors. He asks for prayer as he completes his journey. Paul’s example challenges us to have a burden for those who are not yet saved. We should be moved not only to pray but also to act for their salvation.

With whom are you most eager to share the gospel message? Ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to find practical ways to share about Jesus through loving words and actions.

🖋 Essay

Giving with Glad Hearts

Paul mentions in today’s passage that the Gentile believers in Macedonia and Achaia were glad to make contributions that aided the poor believers in Jerusalem. What is especially important to note is how and why these believers gave. They were not reluctant or embittered about giving to believers who were geographically far or ethnically different from their own communities. The believers in Macedonia and Achaia recognized the material need of their fellow Christians and were happy to help.

The passage reminds us of the way we ought to give to others in need. Whether we offer our time, money, or talents, when we give, our attitude should reflect a heart of compassion. We should give freely and cheerfully rather than reluctantly or begrudgingly. If we are reluctant, we should stop and check our hearts, asking the Lord why we feel so hesitant. Perhaps we are holding too tightly to our finances or are being too selfish with our time. Perhaps our hearts need to be softened with greater empathy towards others so that we might give the way the Lord intends. Whatever the reason for our reluctance to give, we should aim to give selflessly and sacrificially, just as Jesus did. This is a beautiful standard that God has demonstrated when it comes to giving. God intends for both the giver and the receiver to rejoice as they bless others and are blessed by the exchange.
