Ezekiel 9:1–11 / Faith for Dangerous Days
📖 Scripture
1 Then I heard him call out in a loud voice, “Bring near those who are appointed to execute judgment on the city, each with a weapon in his hand.”
2 And I saw six men coming from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with a deadly weapon in his hand. With them was a man clothed in linen who had a writing kit at his side. They came in and stood beside the bronze altar.
3 Now the glory of the God of Israel went up from above the cherubim, where it had been, and moved to the threshold of the temple. Then the Lord called to the man clothed in linen who had the writing kit at his side
4 and said to him, “Go throughout the city of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament over all the detestable things that are done in it.”
5 As I listened, he said to the others, “Follow him through the city and kill, without showing pity or compassion.
6 Slaughter the old men, the young men and women, the mothers and children, but do not touch anyone who has the mark. Begin at my sanctuary.” So they began with the old men who were in front of the temple.
7 Then he said to them, “Defile the temple and fill the courts with the slain. Go!” So they went out and began killing throughout the city.
8 While they were killing and I was left alone, I fell facedown, crying out, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! Are you going to destroy the entire remnant of Israel in this outpouring of your wrath on Jerusalem?”
9 He answered me, “The sin of the people of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great; the land is full of bloodshed and the city is full of injustice. They say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land; the Lord does not see.’
10 So I will not look on them with pity or spare them, but I will bring down on their own heads what they have done.”
11 Then the man in linen with the writing kit at his side brought back word, saying, “I have done as you commanded.”

🧠 Reflection
Marked for Mercy (9:1–6)
Dressed in linen, the clothing of priests, six angelic beings are released to execute God’s judgment on Jerusalem. A seventh man with a writing kit by his side goes before the others, marking those who grieve over the sin in the land so that they might be spared. Meanwhile, the glory of the Lord abandons the mercy seat on the ark of the covenant, leaving the cherubim on either side behind as God moves to the threshold of the temple. The images are clear: God’s judgment takes place when His presence is withdrawn. Yet, even then, His people are marked with His seal. In these times of upheaval and turmoil, we can rest in this assurance.
Question: What thoughts often fill your mind when you go through difficult or confusing times? Reflect on the fact that God has marked you with His seal.
The Promise in the Slaughter (9:7–11)
We must not overlook the mercy and grace of God seen in this passage. The slaughter commences and the blood flows as the judgment of the almighty God is poured out. The temple is defiled with the bodies of the slain. In horror, Ezekiel falls on his face and cries out to God, asking if He intends to destroy the whole remnant of Israel. It is at this point that the man with the writing kit who has marked the godly in the midst of the godless returns. This is the answer to Ezekiel’s anguished prayer: God knows those who are His and keeps them even as the rest of the world faces judgment. It is the answer to our prayers as we await the coming judgment of God on the world. God’s grace will sustain us!
Question: Allow yourself to enter into the grief of the prophet over the horror and extent of God’s coming judgment. What prayer are you moved to pray?

🙏 Prayer
Lord Jesus, if it were not for Your great grace and abundant mercy, we would all be marked for judgment. Knowing this, I pray for a lost and sinful world, that those who are bound in the chains of sin might be set free. In Your name, amen.
🖋️ Essay
Repent and Be Saved
Have you ever decided to play with fire or go as close to the line of sin as possible without committing sin? In my younger days, sadly, this was the mentality that I often had. Is it really that bad? I’m not actually sinning, am I? God won’t be that mad at me if I do this, will He? This, of course, is the wrong attitude to have when it comes to sinning against the Lord. Romans 6:13 says, “Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.”
If you have ever wondered how God feels about sin, Ezekiel 9:1‒11 gives us a clear and grave reality check. God hates sin and will punish it severely. After reading this passage, I am reminded of how grateful I am to the Lord that it is not my merit that saves me from the wages of sin. If it were, I would instantly be condemned as guilty. Romans 6:23 assures us that it is through faith in Christ that we are granted eternal life. “For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Thank you, Lord, for the gift of eternal life! May we turn away from sin out of love for You and obedience to Your commands.
