Psalm 76:1-12 / God Is on His Throne
📖 Scripture
1 God is renowned in Judah; in Israel his name is great.
2 His tent is in Salem, his dwelling place in Zion.
3 There he broke the flashing arrows, the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.
4 You are radiant with light, more majestic than mountains rich with game.
5 The valiant lie plundered, they sleep their last sleep; not one of the warriors can lift his hands.
6 At your rebuke, God of Jacob, both horse and chariot lie still.
7 It is you alone who are to be feared. Who can stand before you when you are angry?
8 From heaven you pronounced judgment, and the land feared and was quiet—
9 when you, God, rose up to judge, to save all the afflicted of the land.
10 Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise, and the survivors of your wrath are restrained.
11 Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them; let all the neighboring lands bring gifts to the One to be feared.
12 He breaks the spirit of rulers; he is feared by the kings of the earth.

✅ Reflection
The End of Chaos (76:1–9)
We live in tumultuous times. Wars, together with the pursuit of wealth and power, are wreaking havoc around this world. The “afflicted of the land”
(v. 9), of whom there are many, are crushed under the weight of it all. But a day is coming when the weapons of war will be broken, and those who wield them will be silenced. Despite the chaos of our world, we can know for sure that the almighty God will one day execute His righteous judgment. The afflicted will be saved, and those who oppress them will be judged. These things are so certain that the psalmist writes in the past tense, as if they have already taken place. Because God always keeps His word, the justice He promises is as good as done.
Reflect on what the promise of this psalm means to you personally. How do the words of the psalmist encourage you in the struggles you currently face?
Honoring God in Turbulent Times (76:10–12)
The problems in our lives and world often appear insurmountable. Even the most godly and gifted leaders among us seem powerless against them. Not God! Humanity may not have the answers or strength to fix a world gone mad, but God does. For this reason, He is to be praised. God’s wrath against injustice is cause for celebration. We rejoice in that coming day when the Almighty will still the raging seas of our violent world. In the meantime, the psalmist urges us to make vows and bring gifts to our Lord. In other words, to align our lives with His will and His ways. As we do so, we gain an eternal perspective and a renewed hope for the trials we face.
What comes to mind as you reflect on the “vows” and “gifts” mentioned in this psalm? How has serving Christ been an encouragement to you?

Be Still and Know
Throughout my Christian walk, I have always viewed God as a gentle Shepherd, forgiving and kind. Though this is true, it is not the full picture of the God we serve. Today’s passage is a poignant reminder that God is neither weak nor passive. On the contrary, He is powerful and just, a mighty warrior with no rival. What great comfort this brings! We will face many battles in our lifetime and we must remember that it is the Lord who fights on our behalf. Exodus 14:14 states, “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
During a particularly challenging time, many years ago, God inspired me to write this poem. May it encourage you to be still and put your trust in Him.
“When the trials never seem to end, when you force a smile but can no longer pretend, when things don’t go the way you intend, be still My child and know.
When life’s storms seem to be closing in, when you’re running in circles but can’t seem to win, when the clouds are thick and the silver lining thin, be still My child and know
That you were planned from the very start, I don’t make mistakes; you’re a work of art. You hold the highest place in my heart, be still My child and know
That I am God and will always be the one you can turn to for your every need. I love and adore you, you’re precious to Me, be still My child and know.”
